Something that I am sure people don’t realize is that braces are the mortal enemy of the toothbrush.  I go from shiny new toothbrush to shaggy dog in about 3 weeks. The problem with trying to brush with a mashed up brush head is that you lose the ability to direct the bristles into the spaces between the gum and braces effectively which means that you miss out on a really good brush into some of the areas that need the attention to ensure you don’t get plaque buildup. Well I have been using my elastics now for 7 weeks.  In that time I have graduated from Bears to Impalas because I was doing so well at wearing them my teeth had moved enough to use a smaller, tighter elastic.  Yay for me!  I really wanted Monkeys though…much more fun sounding…oh well! What can I tell you about elastics? To spite popular belief you cannot simply open your mouth and flick them off at people (well I can’t anyway…and I was so looking forward to doing it to the kids!). Adult Braces Journey – Feeling OK

Hmmm….well it only took about a week and my tongue did in fact get used to the buttons rubbing on it ceaselessly…go figure! I stopped poking continuously at the elastics with the tip of my tongue, which was nice too, (the novelty just wore off). My teeth adjusted to the extra pressures of the wire and buttons and they are not sore either. So I can eat and brush with ease again…isn’t the human body’s ability to adapt amazing! The only side issue is that foods that are ‘stringy’ tend to get stuck around the buttons.  For example nectarine pulp, bean shoots, ham, orange ...
